Burnout is defined by physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion and it is caused by chronic workplace stress that has not been well managed. Health care workers who are experiencing burnout are more prone to absenteeism, physical and mental health issues, and committing medical errors. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts to improve well-being of health professionals is being utilized as a strategy for preventing burnout and other negative outcomes. Well-being is determined by both individual factors—such as psychological resilience and physical health—and environmental factors like peer support and workplace safety.
