Targeting Rural Health Care Workforce Investments by Tracking the Local Distribution of Medicaid Primary Care Providers

The Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) will invest $50 billion to strengthen healthcare access and workforce capacity in rural communities across the United States. As states develop proposals to access these funds, they need reliable data to understand the providers currently serving rural Medicaid populations and identify areas with workforce shortages. The US Medicaid Primary Care Workforce Tracker offers a unique national resource for examining the primary care workforce serving Medicaid beneficiaries, including county-level data for rural areas.

This article assesses the distribution of primary care providers serving Medicaid beneficiaries using the US Medicaid Primary Care Workforce Tracker, to help states better target RHTP investments to improve access, strengthen workforce capacity, and support long-term sustainability in rural communities.
