Variation in Use of Psychiatric Collaborative Care Model Codes and Episodes of Care for Commercially Insured Individuals

Integrated behavioral health, which incorporates behavioral health services into general medical settings, is an effective approach to improving access to mental health care. The psychiatric collaborative care model (CoCM), a team-based approach involving a primary care provider, behavioral health care manager, and consulting psychiatrist, has strong evidence supporting its effectiveness for treating conditions such as depression and anxiety. However, adoption of CoCM has remained limited nationwide, in part because of historical challenges related to billing and reimbursement.

This article examines CoCM billing codes for commercially insured individuals to compare utilization rates across patient characteristics, including age, gender, and diagnosis, as well as by provider type.
